Temples and churches are created for the elevation of the spirit. There are two themes here. One is use of stone as the upliting material. The other uses color in the form of frescoes and painting to transport.
The properties of stone, the texture, tone, hue and the way it receives light create a wide range of spirit elevating effects. It is those effects that I am trying to capture,
especially the way light resonates with the interplay of shadow and line within a stone
structure.
The painting of temple and church like other adornments seeks to create a connection between color, form and the transcendent. Curiously the passage of time often adds to the mystery and appeal of old paint and frescoes.
